I think I’m stating the obvious when I tell you that I love to curl my hair! I’ve also been using the same curling iron for years and it’s your basic 1″ barrel with a clip to hold the curls when they’re heated and I’m at the point now where I can do it in under 20 minutes and if I tried, I might even be able to get the job done with my eyes closed.
So, I was really excited when the wonderful team at NuMe asked if I would like to give their curling wand a try and because I’m so used to using my older curling iron, I knew it was a great time for me to branch out and try something new. With summer just around the corner, I knew that with my new curling wand I really wanted to try and create some loose, wavy, beach curls at home. I just love the overall relaxed look that they bring and even though I’m constantly curling my hair already, I’m so used to creating a perfect barrel curl and knew it was time for a change.
NuMe generously sent me their Titan 3, which is a 3-1 set of barrels that you can interchange in one. For my look today, because my hair is so long right now and I knew I wanted a loose curl, I chose the largest barrel. If I wanted to, I could have changed out the barrels midway through and perhaps used a skinnier one on my top layers but, again, loose and relaxed was the goal so I knew keeping the curls as big as possible was the way to go. Of course, if you have medium or short hair, you can easily change the side of the barrel depending on how tight you want the curl (skinny barrel) to how loose you want it (big barrel).
The wand set came in a pink and white cylinder shaped container and aside from the pretty packaging, the wand itself is also shiny, sleek and bright. It’s lightweight, easy to turn on/off, change temperatures depending on how hot you like your iron, and it’s also really easy to change out the barrels, too. I also received a nice paddle hair brush (my favorite!), a bottle of Argan Oil, and a glove to help protect my hand and fingers when I’m curling my hair.
Because I’m so used to a curling iron with a clip, I will say it took me a minute or two to get myself orientated with this new tool. I’m so used to pointing my curling iron up and with this wand, I found it much easier to manage my hair and the curling with the rod pointed down. (See pictures below.) So, while it took me a minute to figure out what was most comfortable (don’t forget to use the glove!!!), it became really easy once I got started.
Down below, I’m going to walk you through the basic steps I took to create my loose curls. I think the biggest difference between today’s look and what I’m most used to create is that today my curls are less uniform, much more relaxed, and don’t tend to blend together into one. I felt like with the wand, I had the freedom to add so much more style to my curls than I would with just a regular iron!
Feel free to share any feedback, ask questions, and let me know what you think!
I break my hair down into layers, starting at the nape of my neck and working my way up. Depending on the overall thickness of your hair, create sections in each layer to curl. My hair tends to be more on the thinner side so my layers might be a lot wider just because I can curl larger sections at a time.
Pull your hair from the back (I almost create a part down the middle and pull equal parts to each side) and repeat the curl.
Before I pull down the second layer of hair, I apply a little bit of hair spray to the pieces I just curled to help set the curls and to keep them separated from the new pieces I just brought down. This is a really important step from me to ensure that the straight hair doesn’t get tangled with the curled hair. It’s also a great way for me to add a little texture to my hair since it tends to be very soft and this helps create a lot of body.
Giving a slight tug to the fresh curl makes it appear like a loose curl instead of a tight curl.
Normally, I curl ALL of my hair away from my face (see the first picture for an example of curling back or away!) but for today’s look, I alternated between curling pieces towards my face AND away from my face. It created a little bit of randomness to the curls but also helps to make sure that the curls don’t all come together as one and instead, stay loose and separated.
Also, take notice that the curling wand doesn’t get too close to my roots! I think this makes a really big difference in how I normally curl my hair for tight, uniformed curls and what I was trying to create today, a loose and relaxed curl. Leaving that inch or so of my roots un-curled really keeps things so much more laid back than what I’m used to doing!
That being said, I always like to keep the piece on the top of my head and closest to my face curled AWAY to keep it from falling in my eyes. I also love a good “swoop” curl to create a bangs effect.
After all the pieces have been pulled down and curled, I loosen the roots with my finger tips. If you wanted a more “piecey” look, you can stop right here! These curls are easily modified to whatever you prefer and if you wanted to show more defined curls, this is a quick way to get that look.
I prefer more of a softer look to my curls so I used the paddle brush to softly brush the curls out. Be gentle and avoid pulling too much so you don’t loose too much of the curls and to avoid pulling down any volume you created while curling.
The finished product looks a little something like this!
Is it wrong to love your own hair?! I hope not. I’m loving the way the NuMe wand completed transformed what I’m used to into something so different. These loose waves and curls are summer ready! Relaxed and ready to go. Aside from loving how much this wand curls my hair, I’m so glad that I finally have a FULL SET of barrels to work with depending on how I wanted to style my hair that day. I love top of the line, quality products that do what they’re supposed to and last a lifetime. Whenever I use the NuMe wand, I even know that my “Day Two” hair is going to look just as fabulous as the day I styled it. One of my favorite things to do is pull my hair back in a curled pony tail for a completely different look on the following day.
I also love that NuMe sent me a bottle of Argan Oil to try as well! I’m actually surprised it took my this long to try it on my own with it being as popular as it is but what I noticed about my hair after applying even just a little bit before I curled it was that my hair stayed so soft and smooth! It also doubles up as a heat protectant which is always great when you’re applying hot tools to your hair. Great addition to my hair routine, curling or not.

Hi, what temp do you prefer to set your iron to?
Maureen says
Hi! I prefer it super hot and I don’t curl it for too long, maybe 15 seconds at the most and try to keep my ends out as long as possible. 🙂

Thank you so much!

How do you manage day 2 hair? My hair appears to be the same thickness and texture as yours, but even with dry shampoo it still feels so oily and won’t hold curl…
The Busy Brunette says
I agree, Traci! I have the same problem!

I am the same way! Day 2 hair is as far as I can go and it has to be up…which is why I love a pony tail the day after I curl my hair. It’s still pretty textured from the hair spray and if it’s looking super flat on my head, I’ll go ahead and tease the roots a tiny bit an add more hair spray. I’ve yet to find a dry shampoo that works well for me…

Nice to hear because your hair always looks beautiful!

Gorgeous! How long are the promo codes valid for?

Maureen,
Thanks so much for this post! I know this is a bit different than your usual curling, but I appreciate the step by step tutorial. Just out of curiosity, what is your hair routine? That is, do you wash every day, every other day, etc.? Do you wash at night or in the AM?
Thanks!

Hi! I generally wash it every other day. It’s down the day I wash and then pulled back on day 2. My hair can handle every day washes just fine and it doesn’t dry out, it’s just a time issue mostly. Sleep? Or wake up early to wash my hair? 😉
Maureen says
Oh – and I have to wash it in the morning. It’s never the same over night for me.

A couple of pics of how you wrap the section of hair onto the barrel would be helpful for those of us not used to this. Thanks for the detailed post though. Will give it a try.
